Calling ALL Nurses
KHCA Nursing Advisory Committee workgroup has been meeting on a regular basis to discuss diabetic management and best practices in long term care. Frequent incidence of deficiency including physician notification protocol, have prompted NAC to move forward on this project.
The workgroup, consisting of Judy Bagby, Mary Lou Auer, Amy Higgins, Lydia Fields, Carrie Miller, Lynda Power, Tony Pommier, Carol Feaker, Judy Adams and Betty Cline are developing a campaign to educate physicians, staff, residents and families on best practices for diabetic management.
The following mission statement was developed as the cornerstone for this project:
We believe that respecting personal choice and autonomy is the key to successful diabetic management. We believe that this can be achieved by addressing resident satisfaction through diets and medication management; promoting quality of life through education of physician, provider, resident and family while being mindful of fiscal constraints.
NAC plans to work closely with KDOA and AMDA in creating this best practice.
The next Nursing Advisory Committee meeting will be a conference call November 30th at 9:30. All nurses in all member facilities are members of NAC and are invited to participate in this call.
Dial in at 1-800-917-9796 and enter passcode: 658145# when promoted.

Health Information Exchange
As the Federal Administration calls for widespread adoption of health information technology (HIT) and an electronic health record for all Americans in ten years, the need to understand a healthcare stakeholder's ability to exchange health information is of utmost importance. The Kansas HIT/HIE Policy Initiative is fielding the Kansas Health Information Exchange (HIE) Baseline Survey to collect baseline data and evaluate issues associated with the adoption of HIT and the electronic exchange of health information in Kansas.
The survey can be accessed online via SurveyMonkey at the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=799382687654 A copy of the survey is attached for your review prior to entering the online survey. Some questions may require collaboration with other departments within your organization. You may leave the survey and come back to complete it, as long as you complete it on the same computer. If a question is not relevant to your organization, please skip it and move on to the next question.
Please share this survey link with anyone you think should participate in the survey. Please note, this survey will only be open for a short time. The last day to participate is November 10th. Once the final results are available and summarized, the Technical Workgroup will utilize the findings to create technical recommendations for HIE in Kansas. Individual responses will not be disclosed to the public.
If you have questions regarding the survey, please contact Gretchen Speer, Kansas Health Policy Authority, at 785-296-8001 or Gretchen.Speer@khpa.ks.gov. For additional information on the Kansas HIT/HIE Policy Initiative visit the workspace at: http://workspace.ehealthinitiative.org/medigent/collaborate/home.aspx (Kansas folder in left column)

Addressing intimacy in long-term care facilities
Policy guidance developed by Center for Practical Bioethics
Residents of long-term care facilities need and desire privacy for intimate relationships and sexual expression. Supporting such relationships is easier said than done, considering the tension often evident in the judgments and social values held by long long-term care staff and residents’ families, to say nothing of the concerns about the facility’s role in providing protective oversight.
Into such a complex venue stepped the Center for Practical Bioethics nearly a year ago, at the request of leaders of long-term care facilities seeking practical, ethically informed policy guidance to address these issues. The result is a guidance document, Considerations Regarding the Needs of Long-Term Care Residents for Intimate Relationships and Sexual Activity.
“This document provides guidance on the intersection between institutional protective oversight and the ordinary privacy rights of individual residents for self expression and intimacy,” says John Carney, vice president for aging and end of life at the Center for Practical Bioethics. “It’s not about investigating aberrant or abusive behavior. The guidelines do not prescribe a one-size-fits-all resolution, but a conceptual framework and methodology that will help long-term care facilities address these sensitive matters.”
