  CMS Caregiving Broadcast

The next Caregiving broadcast sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services New Freedom Initiative Subcommittee (NFI) is scheduled for September 17, 2008,  from 1:00 p.m.—2:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The broadcast will focus on Innovative Employer Caregiving Programs and include presentations from employers and other organizations that have developed and conducted successful programs for employed caregivers.  Presenters will discuss their experience with these programs and how they can be replicated by others to help employed caregivers.

If you are an employer looking to expand or create services and programs to support your employed caregivers, a Caregiver working full or part-time and caring for a loved one, an organization that provides caregiver services, or any one else with an interest in Caregiving, please make plans now to join us on September 17th.

To learn more about the broadcast or to register as an individual viewer or as a host viewing site, please go to: http://www.blsmeetings.net/caregivers/ .  Also, please feel free to forward this note and/or the attached flyer to those in your networks who can benefit from this broadcast.

  CMS Updates

* CMS has also issued new QIS Survey Forms on the Kitchen/Food Service Observation (CMS Form 20055) and Environmental Observations (CMS Form 20061), which are also effective September 1st. The forms can be found on the University of Colorado's Division of Health Care Policy and Research Web site, which CMS has designated as the official source of the most up-to-date versions of the QIS Resource Manual and forms.

* CMS has released the draft MDS 3.0 Crosswalk which incorporates the MDS 3.0 items currently proposed for implementation in October 2009. Ongoing research and analysis could result in changes to the document, and the final list will be available by March of next year.

* AHCA has informed us that they have received several requests for clarification of the basis for F156 citations despite facilities providing an expedited appeal notice to residents. AHCA has requested further clarification from CMS regarding notice requirements related to demand billing, including the difference between the expedited appeal and the option to request demand billing. CMS has indicated they will provide additional information on this issue in the future via a Survey and Certification Letter.
